How to Study for Vocabulary Quizzes
The best way to study is to do a little bit each night. Do not wait until the night before a quiz or test to start studying.
Make Connections to Your Life
Try to identify with or make connections with a word. Think about how the word might apply to your life and you will be more likely to remember the word. For example, if the stem word is cap, you might think of a time when you captured or "took" the lead in a game.
Draw or Doodle
Drawing a simple picture for each word is useful. Don't worry about your drawing skills. Your doodle or drawing should connect to the word's meaning and what you can visualize. As you are drawing or doodling, repeat the word and definition out loud. This will help you remember.
Flash Cards
You can make flash cards out of index cards or you can use a single sheet of loose-leaf paper folded into squares. Write each one on one side and the definition on the other. Read the word aloud to yourself and then say the definition. To quiz yourself, look at the word, think of the definition, and then check your answer by looking at the back of the card. You may ask someone to help you study by asking them to show you the word and then give the definition or give the definition and ask you the word.
