The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The Outsiders is a novel that I first read when I was fourteen years old. At the time, it was different from any novel I had ever read before. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did and still do. --Ms. Wages
The Outsiders is a realistic fiction novel. This means that the novel accurately reflects life as it could be lived today, although it takes place in the 1960s. There are no talking animals, wizards, vampires, or imaginary machines. The story is not based on history but there may be some historical (current for the time) events or people mentioned (Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Paul Newman). The Outsiders was partly based on a play called West Side Story, which takes place in the west side of Manhatten in New York City in the 1950s. West Side Story was based on the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. There are also some similarities to a movie called "Crime School" starring Humphrey Bogart. The Outsiders is about a young boy who is growing up believing the world is divided into two sets of people, the socials and the greasers. The Social Set has money and status. The Greasers are poor and live on the "outside." The narrator is a greaser and is willing to fight for his friends until one night something awful happens. What is a Greaser?? In our story, a greaser is a swaggering young tough who puts grease in his hair to slick it back. They model their look after Elvis Presley. Click on Elvis' picture to learn more about him. What is a Soc? In The Outsiders, the Socs are the rich kids who seem to have everything and are social climbers. They wear madras shirts, drive Mustangs, and model their look after the band, The Beatles.
