Vocabulary Study
Vocabulary is a big part of RELA. This year, in addition to studying new vocabulary from our stories, we will also be studying word stems. Word stems are also commonly known as root words, suffixes, and prefixes. These word stems come mainly from Latin and Greek.
Knowing word stems will enable students with the ability to figure out definitions of challenging vocabulary words. It also helps with advance courses in high school as well as on the SAT test.
It is important to review vocabulary each night. Try using new vocabulary or word stems in your writing or conversation. It will help you remember the definitions better.
There will be brief vocabulary instruction in class. Most of the vocabulary work will be done on your own outside of class. Students will have scheduled quizzes on vocabulary stems and words.

A Brief History of the English Language
I find English to be a fascinating language because it is constantly evolving. Five-hundred years ago, English was only spoken by about 2 million people. Today, more than 400 million people learn English as a first language. Another 200 million people learn English as a second language. How has the English we know today change during the year? Why will studying Latin and Greek stems help us expand our vocabulary as scholars?
There are three periods of English: Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. To see how the English language has evolved, visit this link to a BBC (British Broadcasting Company) website below.
